Summary: On their way home to Earth, Keith pilots the Black Lion with Shiro resting peacefully in the bay. It isn't long before things turn sentimental between the two and their overdue reunion finally begins.

Nothing should faze Keith anymore.

In the short time since Zarkon's defeat, he's met his mother, learned the story of his Galran heritage, time-warped his way across the galaxy, and discovered the the Shiro they were traveling with all that time was but one of many clones constructed by Hagar. Lotor's betrayal and sudden insanity is just the icing on a very big, ugly pile of shit for him, but he isn't one to waste food or run away from Life anymore, so he reached for bite after bite with all the luck and dignity he could muster.

Thanks to his diligence and Allura's magic, though, he has accomplished things he never dreamed possible.

Faltering a little at the controls, he glances over his shoulder at his single passenger slumbering peacefully in the corner behind the cockpit. Difficult to believe that the real Shiro was housed within the Black Lion's conscience this entire time, Keith sighs and feels the urge to berate himself again for not being able to tell the difference.

"Hnn..." Shiro mutters and rolls onto his side, knocking the corner of his blanket covering his chest.

Sitting up, Keith switches his Lion to auto-pilot a moment and crosses the cockpit to the small bay behind it. He brows drop a little and his eyes crinkle with the slightest affection as he fixes the blanket. Fingers stray into Shiro's now-completely silver hair, threading through the strands of his bangs that hang over his forehead. There's no sweat on his friend and fellow paladin's brow this time, he also notes with a laugh. Shiro looks peaceful for the first time since Keith has left Earth.

"Mmph..." Shiro grunts again, lip twitching as Keith's hand accidentally brushes against his cheek. His narrow, dark eyes open a little to take in the sight standing over him, staring at him fondly. "Keith?"

"It's all right," Keith reassures him, smiling. "We're on our way home just as planned. Allura needs another ship if we're to continue our mission, right? The Lions also need a safe haven and a place for repairs."

As Shiro tries to sit up, Keith can't stop the gasp that escapes him, reaching for Shiro and catching him before he collapses onto the bed again. Exhaling sharply, Shiro leans into that warm embrace and chuckles a little. "Sorry I won't be of much help for a while. My strength has yet to...return."

Keith shakes his head but doesn't have the heart to get Shiro to lie down again, proud as the other man is. "Are you glad to be back?"

"Of course!" Shiro chirps, smiling more brightly this time. "I missed all of you terribly."

Leaning Shiro against the safety of the adjacent wall for support, Keith stands after and pulls a crate over to sit down. "We missed you too," he says softly, averting his eyes for a moment. "Myself, most of all."

"Hm?" Shiro's eyebrows jump. "It must have been hard on you, Keith. I'm...I'm sorry."

"What? No, no!" Keith shouts frantically, reverting to the boy Shiro once knew at the academy as he waved his hands in front of him for emphasis. "You're not at fault for anything, Shiro! All the suffering and sacrifices you've ever made for us have been more than anyone could hope to measure up to!"

Shaking a little, Shiro splutters with laughter. "Calm down. You don't have to get so worked up about it; I'm back, and this time, I'm here to stay."

"I just..." Keith starts again, rife with embarrassment at his outburst. "We all just hold you in such high regard, that's all. That's what I was trying to get across."

"Thank you," Shiro breathes a little heavier, but his smile remains. "You should also hold yourself in high regard, Keith, with all that you've accomplished in my absence."

Keith's heart thunders with the praise and blood drums in his ears.

"I'm so proud of the man you've become."

Emotion overwhelms Keith and the floodgates burst open as tears fall from his eyes, he bites his lower lip and it feels like they're back at the academy again. Shiro doesn't look or even act surprised, he simply smiles warmly and opens his arms to the younger man, embracing him as he rushes in without hesitation.

"I wouldn't be the man I am without you," Keith murmurs into his chest, hugging him gently so as not to injure him. "You never stopped believing in me, Shiro. Never." Pulling away with red eyes and tear-tracked cheeks, Keith finally smiles again. "When the walls were closing in around me, you were there when no one else wanted to be. I found my mother because of you."

Shiro gasps a little as Keith brushes his bangs upward and leans in to kiss his forehead gently.

"Do you have any idea how much all of that means to me?" Keith repeats and presses their foreheads together with a slight laugh. "What you mean to me?"

With color leaping across his face, Shiro can't help the feeling in the pit of his stomach. "I had no idea that it ran this...deep."

"When we get back to Earth," Keith promises him, taking his hands in his own, "you and I have a lot of catching up to do."

Shiro's heart dances with frenzy.

"A lot," Keith repeats, smiling a little wider. "Just a forewarning."

With a sharp inhale, Shiro nods and squeezes his hands a little. "I'll look forward to it."
