Title: Better Late than Forever
Fandom: Blood Blockade Battlefront
Character(s): Klaus/Leo/Steven
Prompts: Midnight Kiss
Rating(s): PG
Warning(s): None
Summary: Steven never did care for the holidays. Too noisy and too much focus on family, he prefers a stack of papers to file over a cheerful gathering. His boyfriends aren't about to afford him the luxury, though, and ambush him as he walks through the door on Christmas Eve.
Scrooge. Grinch. Spoilsport. Killjoy.
They're titles that Steven has come to accept over the years. The holiday season always comes with bright lights, noisy gatherings, and too many damn relatives, all the things he tends to avoid. A quiet evening at home is so much more than a night on the town with a loud, raucous group anyway.
Klaus and Leo are the only exceptions, though.
Both men are over-enthused about this time of year, and he cherishes them more than his own privacy or comfort, so he ends up going along with whatever they suggest. It's enjoyable to see them get worked up over it, besides, and he derives a lot of pleasure in making their night by attending another office party or shopping trip. Even putting up a tree in Klaus's modest villa was fun, he recalls with a bit of shock, pausing with his paperwork a moment.
Tonight is different, though.
With a deadline looming and the threat of work overload at the start of a new year, Steven opts for an all-nighter at the office in lieu of Christmas Eve activities as Klaus's place. It didn't take long for both boyfriends to volunteer their time and effort following his declaration, but sadly they didn't linger long enough to finish everything. Steven is left to his own thoughts and lonely devices while he toils through the rest of the paperwork.
Sighing, he taps away at his laptop with his glasses sliding down the steep ridge of his nose while he analyzes more of this year's payroll edits. The numbers are all starting to look alike and he swears dyslexia is kicking into overdrive as he pinches his forehead and huffs.
"Just a little more," he tells himself aloud, scrolling through the next spreadsheet. "You can do this, Steven."
Another pause.
Did he just refer to himself in the third person?
Exhaustion hits him like a wave after that and he can barely keep his focus trained on the task at hand. All his mind can return to is the warmth of Klaus's villa, those sparkling lights on the tree they put up together and the smiles on his boyfriends' faces as they help him out the star atop it. His attention strays long enough for him to pull his phone from his pocket and star browsing through pictures. Leo and Sonic all done up in ribbons, Klaus attempting to wrap one of his own packages, Gilbert in the kitchen making sweets, and everyone from the office gathered in the foyer with enough champagne to topple a Blood Breed flash through his screen.
He smiles a little and affords himself the luxury of a chuckle, tired as he is.
This is where he wants to be.
Another few pictures and texts are enough to finalize his decision.
He should be there.
Checking his watch, he quickly shuts his laptop off and stands to grab his coat. He hails a cab once he's outside of the office (because he's much too tired to drive coherently) and even pays the driver extra to run every red light from there to Time Square. Huffing, he bids the driver goodnight once they arrive at the gates of Klaus's villa and he staggers out of the cab to check his watch again.
"Eleven-fifty-eight," he murmurs and rummages through his pockets for the key. "Just in time, I hope."
There aren't any lights on in the estate when he approaches on foot, so when he unlocks the front door and is suddenly blinded by the lights switching on, he almost falls over backwards.
"Merry Christmas!" Leo and Klaus shout in unison, embracing him from the front and back.
Steven falters a little in his steps as he tries to process what just happened. "How...? Why...?"
"You're not the only one with GPS on his phone!" chirps Leo, smiling mischievously. "Klaus and I were waiting a long time for you to leave that stuffy old office, you know."
"But leave you did," adds Klaus with a dorky grin of his own, hugging Steven from behind as he leans down to plant a kiss of his neck. "You set your workload aside in favor of spending Christmas Eve with us. We couldn't be prouder."
"Or happier!" Leo chimes in and squeezes Steven around his middle. "I don't know how many more Rankin-Bass re-runs I could have taken if you hadn't shown up! Klaus, on the other hand..."
Klaus laughs sheepishly. "I do enjoy them so."
"That's what makes you cute, though." Leo reaches around Steven's waist to tug on Klaus's tie, pulling him down for a quick peck on the chin. "You're a big kid at heart."
Gasping a little, Steven finally lets that smile slip between his defenses and allows his boyfriends to lead him into the living room. They all three flop onto the sofa together, laughing as they do so.
"You're cute, too, you know," Leo whispers into Steven's ear and follows up with a caress against his cheek. "Even when you don't mean to be or want to be."
"Very cute," agrees Klaus, wrapping an arm around Steven's shoulders and giving him a squeeze. "Almost as cute as Leo."
"Ehh? What's that supposed to mean?" Leo frowns a little.
Steven seizes the opportunity with a wicked smile and a ruffle of Leo's fluffy hair. "You are the youngest flower in our little garden, kiddo."
"Pfft, That doesn't mean anything," Leo scoffs and pouts, folding his arms. A moment of silence goes by and he reiterates with a bit more uncertainty, "Right?"
"What's wrong with being cute?" Klaus asks in all honesty, tilting his head at an angle. "It's just part of your unique charm."
Looping his arm around Leo's waist, Steven pulls him in closer. "We love you for it, too."
Simply smiling and accepting things for what they are, Leo snuggles into Steven's embrace just as Klaus also cuddles Steven's other side. The warmth of the fire and the twinkling lights of the tree set Steven's tired mind at ease, and it isn't long before's he's nodding off.
The last thing he feels before going to sleep is a soft kiss on either side of his cheek, followed by 'Merry Christmas, Steven.'
