Trevor surprises himself when he takes leave of Sypha to check on their half-vampire compatriot upstairs, still holed up in his parents’ former bedchamber, and Sypha didn’t once mention that Trevor should do so. His hand stills at the door, loosely formed into a fist and ready to knock, when a soft, ‘It’s open,’ sounds from within.

“Sorry,” Trevor gruffly apologizes as he twists the knob and enters at last. “If I’m bothering you or – “

“Please, sit down,” Alucard offers him a chair at the bedside, circling around it to sit on the edge of the mattress himself. “I’m all right, if that’s what Sypha was wondering.”

Trevor opens his mouth to speak but quickly snaps it shut with a frown.

Alucard quirks a brow. “I assume that’s why you came up, at least?”

“I was wondering how you were doing,” Trevor mutters at length, looking up from his boots with a sympathetic smile. “Surely, you’ve heard stranger before.”

“This is a pleasant surprise, then. Thank you,” Alucard says with a smile warming his cold features. “I was just revisiting a fond memory is all. My father was as good with his hands as he was with his intellect, you see.”

An ornate, hand-carved music box is passed to Trevor and he hesitates in accepting it from Alucard for fear of damaging it. The woodworking is unlike anything that Trevor has ever seen, depicting a couple of wolves atop the box’s lid and an etching of the full moon behind them as they sprinted across the smooth surface.

“Open it,” Alucard bids him.

As carefully as he can, Trevor pops the lid open and a melody wafts around on the air. It isn’t at all melancholy, which is the type of music one associates with a haunted brood like Alucard, but sprightly and gay. It’s almost a tune that one could dance to.

“It was a gift from my father to my mother,” explains Alucard as he takes the box from Trevor to set it atop the nightstand. “They attended a human harvest celebration immediately after their marriage. My mother even taught father how to dance the Invirtita.”

Trevor leans back in his chair with a laugh. “Can’t see Dracula making merry at a human festival, but I’ll take your word for it.”

Alucard’s eyes light up. “Do you dance, Belmont?”

“What?” Trevor jerks out of his relaxed position, muscles rigid. “M-My family had no use for such things, so no; I never learned.”

“A pity,” Alucard says with a slight smirk. “Then again, you aren’t the most sure of foot during battle from what I have observed in the past, so maybe it’s for the best.”

With his eyebrow twitching, Trevor grunts, “Is that your pathetic attempt at issuing a challenge?”

Alucard rises from the bed and extends his hand with a flourish and a slight bow. “Let’s see if you’re able to keep up with my instruction, then.”

“Only to prove a point,” Trevor adds and stands from his chair, grimacing as Alucard moves closer. “Where do I put my hands?”

“My shoulders,” says Alucard, adjusting him as he sees fit in spite of the death glare he earns from Trevor for it. “Try to relax. It’s a dance, not a romp around some godforsaken countryside with a Night Horde demon.”

Trevor’s shoulders slump and he eases up on his grip, fighting the urge to knee his friend in the balls.

“I’m supposed to hold you by the waist, but…” Alucard’s voice trails off as he feels around Trevor’s midsection and sides purposely, searching for his hips beneath all those garments he has on. “Ah, there it is. I always assumed you didn’t have much for a waist or hips, but I’m glad you’ve proven me wrong on that account.”

A shiver crawls along Trevor’s spine as Alucard stares into his eyes, gauging his reactions, but Trevor manages to keep himself composed. They start to move and thus the struggle begins.
Trevor shuffles along the floor clumsily, barely able to keep up with the most basic of steps, and after he steps on Alucard’s foot for the third time, Alucard finally stops.

“You need to follow my lead,” Alucard explains with a huff. “I’m the instructor, Trevor.”
That dominant tone sends that previous chill straight to Trevor’s stomach and sparks a few embers he’d thought had long since gone cold.

“I’ll count us off again. Just relax and follow my steps to the rhythm of the music,” Alucard says and starts to move again. “Like that, yes. Good.”

Praise has an even queerer effect on Trevor, he notices, as the hunter figuratively steps up his game and leans into the slow spin that Alucard prompts. A few more times Trevor accidentally misses a step or a beat, but he recovers with a grunt and falls right back into place at Alucard’s side.

“What dance is this?” Trevor asks suddenly, looking up from the floor to glance at Alucard.
A fond smile thins Alucard’s lips and he leans over to whisper into Trevor’s ear, “The dance that my mother taught to father that night, the Invirtita.”

Trevor laughs a little and smiles back at him. “Tell me that you inherited your mother’s skill for dancing and not your father’s. I cannot fathom Dracula the sort to have been born with a talent for this.”

“I did take after my mother, actually. My father was a terrible dancer,” Alucard jokes with him, smiling more as he recalls impromptu dances in the castle hallways and his father’s study. “He always was a bit clumsy, but he made up for it with his effort and enthusiasm. I loved dancing with him as a child.”

They slow to a stop and Trevor is out of breath by the time they finish, grinning still. The music box continues to churn the lovely tune as he regards Alucard with a thoughtful hum, “In a way, we’re honoring your parents’ memory by dancing the Invirtita, don’t you think?”

Alucard’s golden eyes widen a bit. “That’s a romantic thought, coming from you.”

“Hey,” Trevor shakes his finger at Alucard, grinning again, “I’ll have you know that I’ve matured dramatically as far as emotions go. After all, I was the one to come up and check on you.”

“That you were,” Alucard agrees, chuckling a bit. “I’m also grateful that you did. Thank you.”
Blood drums in Trevor’s ears and he feels that old familiar insecurity sneaking up on him as he rubs the back of his head and averts his eyes again.

Alucard’s smile softens and he tucks his fingers under Trevor’s chin to lift his head so that their eyes meet again. His breath catches a little and he’s suddenly remembering how easy it is to lose yourself in eyes this blue, but Trevor takes no notice of his revelation.

“Perhaps you’d honor me with another dance?” he asks, trying to pass off his embarrassment.

Trevor claps his hands onto his shoulders and boasts, “Just don’t be angry when I surpass your level of skill.”

Snorting, Alucard finds his waist easily this time and pulls him closer. “We’ll see about that.”
