Summary: Puro Land is re-releasing limited edition snow globes of the boys' favorite mascots for the promotion of Winter Fest and they're all stoked. There's only one catch: couples get into the gift shop earlier than everyone else, so guess who finally gets together?
The sliding door to the club room slams against its frame on the wall, startling everyone in the room from their boredom. The club's poor adviser, Naoki-sensei, catches the worst of it as he falls from his swivel chair onto the hard floor. Before anyone can say a word, Subaru is groaning and rolling his eyes.
"The hell, Hasegawa?" he grunts. "You almost gave the teacher a heart attack."
Excited just a moment ago to the point of exploding, Kouta's chipper demeanor takes a nosedive when he spots Naoki on the floor with Seiichirou at his side, helping him up. It doesn't take long for panic and apology to fill the void left in his gaping expression, and he rushes over to assist.
"I am so, so sorry, sensei!" he apologizes and claps his hands together with his eyes squeezed shut. "I just had some really great news and I guess my brain hadn't quite caught up with my enthusiasm when I entered the room...Sorry."
Laughing a little and rubbing his head, Naoki reassures him, "It's all right, Hasegawa. No harm done."
"'Cept he almost killed the club adviser," mutters Subaru between mouthfuls of melon bread. "Ow! Hey!"
"Cool it," Shunsuke bids him with a little smile, knowing full well that the 'harshness' intended by Subaru's speech is no more dangerous than Kouta's enthusiasm. "Let him be."
Slithering out from behind his friend, Yuu grins impishly and sidles up next to Kouta. "Ehh, I don't like that idea, ShuShu." He sneaks an arm around Kouta's shoulders and pulls him in tight. "Kouta's cute when he gets a hold of something he really likes, ne?"
Ryo is the first to pipe up with something sensible, "What has him so worked up, though?"
"While I would like to think it's the thought of being near me," Yuu teases, "I doubt it's that."
Swallowing hard, Kouta tries to shimmy away, but Yuu keeps a hold over him like an octopus. Seiichirou simply laughs in unison with Naoki and approaches, holding his hands up non-threateningly as he suggests, "Why don't you give him a little breathing room, Mizuno? He looks a bit claustrophobic."
It's no use dismissing the obvious color leaping across his face, so Kouta pulls away from Yuu with all the dignity he can muster without seeming rude. Tapping at his phone, his eyes light up when he finds the webpage and he holds it out for all to see.
"Puro Land is re-releasing the limited edition snow globe collection this Saturday only!" The gasps and slack-jawed expressions around him only heap on the anticipation for him. "I thought it'd be a great excuse for a club outing besides! There's the annual Winter Festival, too!"
Even Subaru has a little sparkle in his dark eyes. He fidgets in his chair and drops the manga in his lap to lean forward for a better look. "Is that a...?"
Nodding, Shunsuke ruffles his hair. "A Badtz-Maru snow globe?" His own eyes widen suddenly. "Ah, and of course, my lovely Kitty-chan..."
"And Little Twin Stars, look!" Ryo shouts a little louder than he means to, shrinking back into Seiichirou's chest by accident. "Wah! S-Sorry, president!"
"It's all right, but..." Seiichirou is as composed as always, but with a little more vim and vigor in his smile than normal. "That Cinnamoroll globe would be a perfect addition to my collection."
Naoki coughs into his hand, not commenting on how his heart skipped a few beats at the sight of the Keroppi globe. It's no use hiding it, though, he realizes with laughter a moment later. "I suppose we won't be needing a vote on it, then."
"Hm?" Yuu's eyebrows waggle as he looks up from his phone. "Says here that only couples will be admitted for early gift shop hours, though. It's part of the promotion."
Naturally, Seiichirou grasps Ryo's hand and smiles brighter this time. "That won't be a problem for us, will it?"
"Not since we're a thing already, no..." Ryo murmurs and tries to avoid Seiichirou's steady gaze, unable to resist smiling back at him.
Turning to Shunsuke, Subaru tries to croak something like an invitation, but his senior beats him to it and takes his hand in his own with all seriousness. A firm squeeze is all it takes to set Subaru's heart racing and all the color drains from his face as Shunsuke looks him directly in the eyes and asks, "Would you do me the honor?"
"ShuShu, you showoff!" jeers Yuu gently, waving his hands dismissively. "Theatrics are my thing!"
Naoki starts tapping away at his own phone and sighs. "Well, I have been promising to introduce my boyfriend, so I suppose this is the perfect opportunity."
With everyone around him so lively and chipper, Kouta sinks into the foreground like he usually does. He wants to march right up to his intended with same boldness as Shunsuke or the certainty that Seiichirou has for Ryo, but his anxiety keeps his feet cemented to the floor. When Yuu turns to stare him down, though, his heart leaps into his throat and he overpowers his fears for a brief moment.
“W-We could pose as a couple, right?! It shouldn’t be too hard!” he blurts out, wincing at the way Yuu’s eyebrows rise into his forehead at the suggestion. “I don’t wanna pressure you into anything or – “
“Don’t be silly,” Yuu chides him and taps him on the nose, smiling warmly. “I can play house for as long as you want, Kouta. Why, I’d even be willing to extend it beyond the Winter Festival if you like~”
Kouta’s mouth twitches with more to say, but nothing escapes him as soon as the iron bars clamp around his heart once more. His blush deepens and everyone is staring at this point, at least he thinks they are, so he just coughs into his fist and look down at his shoes instead.
“What time should we all meet up, then?” Naoki offers, sensing the rise in tension between his students. “I assume the meeting place will be the same as always.”
Seiichirou nods in agreement. “The earlier, the better, I think.”
“The gates open at seven, right?” Ryo chimes in and scrolls through the web page once more to verify it. “I think we should get there at least an hour early.”
Naoki turns to the club leader with a smile. “Well, Hasegawa? How does that sound to you?”
“Huh?” Kouta snaps his head up and puts on a pretty mask to fool everyone, grinning. “That sounds great! Yeah.”
Yuu’s own smile turns a little wry at the sight of his despondency. “Hey,” he interjects and throws an arm around Kouta’s shoulders again, giving him a gentle squeeze. “We’re gonna have a lot of fun together, ‘kay? A date with Yuu Mizuno is never a dull one.”
“You’re okay with calling it a date?” murmurs Kouta hopefully, hazarding a glance up at the handsome boy beside him. “Really?”
“With a choice cutie like you at my side? Definitely!” chirps Yuu, grinning like himself again and pulling Kouta tighter this time. He leans over a little to whisper in addition, “I actually wouldn’t mind going on more outings and calling ‘em dates from now on. So…?”
Kouta unintentionally turns and gently bumps foreheads with him, laughing as he does so. “Does that make us…?”
“Boyfriends?” Yuu announces aloud for the rest of the club to hear. “I think that’s what they call it, sweetie. Yeah.”
“’Bout time,” Subaru comments offhandedly, returning to his manga. “You two have been dancing around each other since Hasegawa transferred here.”
Seiichirou smiles and takes Ryo’s hand in his again. “Congratulations, the both of you.”
Waggling his eyebrows, Yuu sidles a little closer to Kouta and leans down again. “Now all that’s left is to make it official with a – “
“S-Shouldn’t we all be getting home soon?!” Kouta interrupts him and stiffens his posture, deftly avoiding Yuu’s wandering, puckered lips. “We have to get in line early and all! Gotta be bright and alert to grab that merch we want!”
Naoki drops his phone into his bag and giggles himself. “Very well,” he agrees, much to Kouta’s relief. “Let’s all save Kouta an embarrassing moment and turn in early, shall we?”
“S-Sensei!” whines Kouta, mouth hanging open. “I though you were on my side!”
Yuu just sighs and releases his new beau. “We’ll just have to reconvene at a more appropriate time, ne? This setting isn’t exactly romantic,” he notes with a grimace, exchanging derisive looks with Subaru. “I’d rather have you all alone and to myself when we –“
“See you guys tomorrow, then!” Kouta hollers again, red-faced as he slings his bag over his shoulder and bolts out the classroom door just as fast as he entered.
Sighs and laughter echo around the room at once and Yuu turns to his friend with a shrug. “Well, at least I got him to ask me out.”
“Good luck getting to first base, though,” Subaru scoffs and gathers up his things. “Hasegawa isn’t exactly –“
Shunsuke’s lips silence his negativity once and for all; it’s a quick kiss, but it’s enough to shock the delinquent into shutting up.
“You do have your hands full, Yuu,” he adds with a smile, “but I believe that you and Kouta will get around to things like that sooner than you think. He has some anxiety problems, but he also has a heart full of passion.”
Seiichirou strolls up with Ryo’s arm entwined around his own. “Indeed,” he says in turn, “and passion always overcomes fear and instability. We’ve seen Kouta come through for us before, right?”
“He’ll do the same for you,” Ryo chimes in again, smiling softly. “Um, especially you…”
Yuu picks up his own bag and heads towards the door, casting a smile at all of them over his shoulder. “I know he will.”
The next morning comes in like a roaring lion, and as Kouta rolls out of bed, panic sets in almost instantly. He spends the first ten minutes sitting on the edge of his bed with a pillow in hand, debating whether or not he needs a practice run before Yuu undoubtedly puckers up again while they’re standing in line. Not wanting to disappoint his first boyfriend, Yuu purses his lips and brings the pillow close, almost making contact when the door to his room swings wide open.
“Yuu, honey?” his mother asks, blinking a few times at the sight. “Breakfast is ready and…are you all right?”
Steaming with embarrassment, Yuu laughs nervously and tosses the pillow onto his bed. “Just checking to see if I really do drool or not! Some of the guys said I did during class yesterday, a-ha-ha…”
Giggling and pressing her hand to her mouth, his mother simply leaves it at that. “It’s almost time for you to leave, but I want you to eat before you go. Fast food can’t be the only part of your diet, teenager or not.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Kouta croaks, still smiling like an idiot. “I’ll be right down.”
His next task is almost as daunting as the kiss itself: finding something to wear.
Yuu is a fashionable guy, so keeping up with him means poring over his wardrobe far longer than he’s used to. After repeated calls from his mother, he finally settles for a pair of nice-looking jeans and a cute sweater, one that Yuu actually bought for him last month but he never got around to wearing.
“Oh, don’t you look handsome!” croons his mother as he comes down the steps.
His father looks up from his paper, wide-eyed at first, but then he smiles. “Who’s the lucky boy or girl?”
Blushing again, Kouta waves his hand and laughs. “I-I’ll explain later.”
“Well, you’d best eat first, though.” His mother sets a plate in front of him. “Can’t have your boyfriend thinking I don’t feed you properly.”
Kouta opens his mouth to protest, but he knows how obvious his crush has been for the past year. He shovels tamagokyaki in place of the complaints and finishes his breakfast in record time, standing to put his dishes away and kiss his mother goodbye.
It’s a brisk morning as he steps out the front door and pops the chute on his umbrella. Snow falls in heavy flakes, but the gentle breeze accompanying it makes for beautiful scenery. As he’s looking around, he catches sight of something by his stairs that takes his breath away.
“Yuu?!”
“You sure kept me waiting,” he chides him gently, smiling as he stands to brush snow off his pants. “What? It’s our first date; I’m not about to do away with tradition and not pick you up.”
Surrender is the only viable option at this point, Kouta figures with a slump of his shoulders and a helpless smile, so he descends the stairs and lets Yuu grasp his hand. He can’t help gasping (a little) at the sudden contact, but he looks back up at his boyfriend with a grin sunny enough to blot out the clouds that loomed overhead.
“You are too cute,” Yuu coos and gives his hand a little squeeze. “You know that already, though. I think you’ll use it more to your advantage now that we’re a thing, too. Right?”
“Ehh?!” Kouta gapes, looking violated. “I-I would never even think of…”
Yuu snickers, “I want you to.”
“You’re not spoiling me rotten. I’m not one of your groupies,” mutters Kouta, pouting a bit.
“Mm. Nope, you’re not,” Yuu agrees and leans in close to peck his cheek, startling him. He pulls back with a lick of his lips and a wink. “You’re my number one from now on.”
Fed up with his boyfriend’s incessant flirting and need to have the upper hand at all times, Kouta suddenly finds his courage as they near the gates of Puro Land. Their friends are all in sight, with Ryo and Naoki waving to them. Kouta waits until they’re only a few feet away before he spins around and grasps Yuu by his shoulders, forcing him to turn as well.
“This is how things are gonna be, then,” he says in a low voice, sparking warmth inside of Yuu’s stomach as he leans in without warning and smashes his lips into Yuu’s. He grasps the collar of Yuu’s coat and urges him to take the lead, pushing into him awkwardly. Gladly taking his chance to grandstand, Yuu obliges him and deepens their kiss by goading Kouta into parting his lips some. It’s a few minutes before they both pull away, gasping for air with a string of saliva between them.
“If that’s how it’s gonna be,” Yuu breathes and takes Kouta into his arms, “then that’s how it’s gonna be, babe. Anything you want~”
Kouta ducks his head a little and laughs. “Anything?”
“Don’t even, ugh!” calls Subaru from the line, grunting a little as Shunsuke pulls him back by his jacket collar. “You two are gonna lose your places if you don’t hurry up!”
Ryo just looks up at Seiichiro and blushes hard, while Naoki plants a gentle peck on his own boyfriend’s cheek. Shunsuke manages to subdue his little delinquent long enough to steal a quick kiss from his filthy mouth, too. As Yuu and Kouta take their place in line again, Kouta whispers to his boyfriend, “Was that a promise, then?”
“Of course,” Yuu reassures him with a wink.
“Good!” Kouta chirps and hangs on his arm a little, grinning up at him. “You can buy my snow globe for me!”
It takes a moment for Yuu to realize he’s been had, but when he does, he just laughs and ruffles Kouta’s hair.
